Clear Channel Radio

Clear Channel is a major media conglomerate that owns six FM radio stations in the Rochester market. After several months of trying they finally persuaded me to swap a scooter for commercial time on one of their stations that targets younger, college age listeners. The scooter was auctioned by them for $655, and I received $1,500 worth of airtime, which translates to 50 spots spread over a ten week period.

An interesting sidelight to this is that the producer couldn’t find any good scooter sounds, so they spent some time at the shop recording the sounds of one of mine. A little bit of that made its way into the commercial.

It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the quarter when sales taxes have to be paid. While I “sold” the scooter, I didn’t collect the sales taxes - Clear Channel did. I have some documentation, but filing this situation will be a new experience for me.
