How is a scooter different from a motorcycle?

If you look at the federal definition of “scooter” you’ll see that it’s basically a motorcycle with a dip in front of the seat.

From a practical standpoint, scooters are smaller and less powerful than motorcycles. A 250cc motorcycle is considered small (for a motorcycle), while a 250cc scooter is considered large (for a scooter). That said, scooters are getting larger, with 650cc models now available.

Because of their smaller size scooters handle differently than motorcycles. They are easier to pick up when you drop them, and get blown around more by the wind. They also can get into tighter places than a motorcycle, and the seats are often lower, which makes them a better fit for women with shorter legs.

Perhaps most importantly, the impression given by scooter riders (aka “scooterists”) tends to be different from that given by motorcycle riders (aka “bikers”). Many people will choose one over the other based on these social aspects rather than the vehicles themselves.
