Can I ride my scooter on the Thruway?

All scooters that can be registered with the DMV may be operated on the Thruway. You can even get an EZ-Pass for one. (This is common around NYC to simplify crossing the bridges.)

That said, I recommend matching the size of a scooter’s engine to the roads where it will be used:

  • 50cc scooters should only be used on city streets (speeds less than 35 mph).
  • 150cc scooters should stay on city streets and suburban roads (speeds less than 50 mph).
  • 250cc and up scooters can go on expressways and the Thruway as well as on city streets and suburban roads.

So unless you have a large scooter (which costs more, is more powerful and less maneuverable), I recommend you stay off the expressways.
